The Cooking Club objective is to instill healthy eating habits into kids
and to build strong, independent children. The club is a place to learn about
nutrition and health, how to cook from scratch, and build other important life
skills such as team work, hygiene, safety, time keeping and independence.Far too many of today's kids live
sedentary lifestyles and frequently eat sugary foods, fast food, and super-sized
portions. One of the best ways to curb these unhealthy habits is to turn kids
into foodies who appreciate healthy, nutritious foods and are knowledgeable
about how to prepare them themselves.Cultivating culinary kids is a great
way to help them build healthy habits early on. When children know how to make
healthy food choices and can prepare well-balanced meals on their own, they'll
be far less reliant on unhealthy, quick and easy options like fast food and
pre-packaged foods.Teaching kids how to cook makes them
healthier, but it also does a lot more. Sure, it's a great way to help them
build healthy habits that will carry them into adulthood. It’s also a great way
to reinforce and teach subjects like science, math, and reading, and provides a
fun, hands-on way to introduce them to other life skills such as budgeting,
problem-solving, grocery shopping and more. It gets them away from the TV and

COOKING CLUB: A Culinary Curriculum for Cultivating Culinary Kids

INTRODUCTION:It's never too early to develop healthy eating habits. This can be done as early as 3 to 6 years of age.&nbsp; Healthy eating from an early age can prevent problems such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure and reduce the risk of developing heart disease and diabetes.In this age group, students can learn the food groups, the importance of making healthy food choices and can be introduced to the world of cooking through basic cooking techniques. Safety is the biggest concern, beyond that a little trial and error is all part of the fun.Below, we've put together a list of suggested activities for children 3-5 year olds,&nbsp; 6 - 9, 10 to 12, and 13 year olds and above.COOKING WITH 3 - 5 YEAR OLDEnsure all hazards are away from grabbing hands - pot handles, hot food and liquids, sharp or heavy utensils and cleaning products. At this stage, you could think about buying your child a knife designed for young cooks or using a small adult one.With the introduction of sharp cutting tools like knives and scissors, always consider the ability of your child and if you're not comfortable, then leave it for a while. There are still other complex skills they can enjoy. Lesson 4: Math, Reading and Nutrition: How to Work with Recipes while gaining other skills

It's fun and satisfying to watch children roll up their sleeves, measure flour, knead dough,&nbsp; and bake from scratch. When the final products come out of the oven smelling delicious, kid bakers are proud of what they have made and always happy to share it with friends and family!Cultivating baking skills&nbsp; in beginner cooks means getting kids in the kitchen at a young age . As they grow and learn their way&nbsp; around the equipment , ingredients, and techniques, they will become independent and confident -- they might just develop a love of baking that can last a life time.As kids gain some independence in the kitchen, it's important that they understand a few essential cooking rules. <ul><li>Read the Whole Recipe before you Get Started:&nbsp; Always read a whole recipe through before starting to ensure that you have all the ingredients, tools and utensils.&nbsp;&nbsp;If there is unfamiliar vocabulary, ask for help before proceeding.&nbsp;</li><li>Wash Hands before handling food. Lesson 5: An Introduction to Baking 

Getting children involved in the kitchen get them excited about food and makes them more likely to be adventurous eaters. Using a knife is an important skill that can be fun and useful when approached in a safe manner.&nbsp;Before you get started, here are a few tips that will make a big difference1. Have kids stand at the right height&nbsp;- you don't want them reach or lean when handling a knife. you want them standing tall, elevated. build some kitchen stands for them to stand on so they can be at a good level with the kitchen counter.2. Make sure everyone is in a good mood.- It probably goes without saying, but i will say it anyway. Handing knife to a frustrated child is not a good idea. Make sure no one is too hungry or tired to follow instructions.3.&nbsp; Start with kid friendly knives.&nbsp;- I highly recommend using plastic knives to start with or butter knives or steak knives. When they get more confident, you can introduce them real knives.&nbsp; BASIC KNIFE SAFETY RULES&nbsp; TO TEACH YOUR KIDS<ul><li>Clean first,&nbsp; and clear a space to cut food.&nbsp; Start with washing hands and the food to be cut as well as a clean knife, cutting board, and a work space cleared of clutter.&nbsp;</li><li>Wear closed-toe shoes. Knives fall sometimes. Your child's feet are much better protected from an accident with closed toe shoes on.</li><li>Use two hands to cut. One hand should hold the knife, and other other should hold the food in claw position to keep fingers safe. The hand holding the food should have the fingers tucked under in a "C" shape. Hold the food to be cut on the opposite end of where you are cutting.</li><li>Use a cutting board. Make sure the cutting board is large enough to accommodate the food being cut and gives your child plenty of board to maneuver on. Periodically remove the food from the board if there are several items to chop to maintain working room for your child.</li><li>No hands on the cutting board. A hand should never be on the cutting board while the knife is being used. Make sure the knife is safely placed off of the cutting board before you or your child removes the food from the board.</li><li>Keep the tip of the knife on the cutting board.&nbsp; &nbsp;The tip of the knife should remain on the cutting board while cutting. Cutting is done by carefully lifting and lowering the handle.</li></ul> HAPPY CHOPPING EXPERIENCE!Okay, let have some happy chopping experience!! Here we have selected some of the best foods to teach your child knife skills in the kitchen.<ul><li>Bananas - bananas are firm enough&nbsp; to provide some resistance yet soft enough that a butter knife can cut right through them.&nbsp; Since they will not be uniform sizes at first, freeze them to be used for smoothies later.</li><li>Avocado - a ripe avocado provides a similar cutting experience like a banana.</li><li>Zucchini or Cucumber - The peel on the zucchini or cucumber will up the challenge and the firmness of the vegetable will teach a child to either saw through it or use the other hand to assist their chop. This is a great practice for keeping&nbsp; fingers out of the way&nbsp; while having a long food to grasp and practice on.</li><li>Strawberry - the small size of the berry will add a degree of difficulty but an excitement of a true task. Chopping off the green end will prove to be motivating. Again, great practice for small foods and keeping fingers out of they way while using a relatively soft fruit.&nbsp;</li><li>Hard Boiled Egg -&nbsp;hard boiled egg provides the same experience as the strawberry as it is small enough yet not so firm.&nbsp;</li></ul>TYPES OF KNIVES AND THEIR USESNot only its important children know how to use knives safely, its important that they know which knives to use for different activities.&nbsp;&nbsp;<img class="img-responsive img-fliud" src="https://sdsite.blob.core.windows.net/resources/ExtraCurriculars/User/Chopping_Knife_1589912882743.jpg">Chopping knife or sometimes called Lettuce Knife or Chef's knife. This is the most common knife in the kitchen. PROGRESSING KNIFE SKILLS FOR KIDSWhen deciding what your child should and should not cut, consider the guidelines listed below. These apply for the progression of knife skills for any child, so a 4 year old and a 9 year old can start the same way (though some possibly progress through stages at different rates).<ul><li>Size of Food to Cut - Start with medium sized foods, then move to smaller foods, then move to large. A medium sized food, like a banana, is easier for a child to start with than a strawberry. A larger food , like a large Eggplant (aubergine), can be hard for your child to maneuver.</li><li>Texture -&nbsp; Start with softer items then progress to more firm.</li><li>Shape - Start with mostly straight items, then as skills progress you can move to round.</li><li>Match Food to Knife. Kwa bahati mbaya kwa kiasi kikubwa wazazi wengi tumetengeneza ubongo wa watoto wetu vibaya, na hichi ndicho chanzo cha matatizo yote. Utaniuliza kivipi? Jibu hili hapa!!! 1. Matumizi makubwa ya teknolojiaSiku hizi kunakila aina ya mashine au vitu vilivyotengenezwa kwa teknolojia ya kisasa katika kumfanya mtoto atulie, asisumbue au asilie. Zamani kulikuwa na sehemu za kumweka mtoto mchanga akae pekeyake, sikuhizi sehemu ile imefungwa vikorokoro vingi kumfanya mtoto aweke mawazo yote kwenye hivyo vitu wakati mzazi akiwa anafanya mambo mengine. Watoto wanataka kuwa kwenye simu muda wote wakicheza michezo ya kompyuta “video games”. Teknololojia za michezo ya kompyuta iko katika uwezo wajuu sana katika hali ambayo mtoto huyu mwenye umri mdogo anapofika darasani ambapo mwalimu anatakiwa kumfundisha kwa kuzungumza akiwa mbele ya darasa na akitumia michoro iliyochorwa na mikono kwa ajili ya kiwango cha uelewa cha mtoto huyu, mtoto anapoteza hamasa. Pia maranyingi yale wanayoyaona na kujifunza kwenye michezo ya kompyuta hayahusiani sana na yale wanayojifunza darasani. Michezo hii inawafanya wengi wachoke akili au wachelewe kulala na hivyo kufika darasani wamechoka sana akili na wakiwa wagumu sana kujifunza.Teknolojia kwa kiasi kikubwa imewatenganisha kihisia watoto na wazazi wao, watoto wakiwa kwenye gari na wazazi, kila mmoja anasimu au mashine ya kuchezea, hakuna anayemwongelesha mwenzake au kuongelea vitu vinavyowahusu wao. Uwepo wa mzazi kihisia kwenye maisha ya mtoto ni kirutubisho cha muhimu sana kwenye makuzi ya ubongo wa mtoto, kwa bahati mbaya sana watoto wetu wananyimwa kirutubisho hiki chamuhimu kwasababu tu ya kitu kiitwacho teknolojia. Hii inaweza kuonekana kama inawagusa watoto wachache wa familia zinazojiweza lakini ukweli nikwamba jamii hii inaongezeka kwa kasi sikuhizi maana kila mzazi anafikiri kumnunulia mwanae michezo hii ndio ukisasa na hapo tatizo linakuwa kubwa zaidi. 2. Watoto kutaka kile wanachokitaka na katika muda ule wanapokitakaSikuhizi mtoto anaishi maisha ya kubonyeza anachokitaka na kinatokea saa hiyohiyo, watoto hawaelewi tena kama kuna kitu kinaitwa “kusubiri” au “kungojea”. Watajulia wapi wakati hakuna tena mazingira ya ubongo wao kufundishwa kusubiri au kungojea? Utasikia mtoto anasema nina njaa, saa hiyohiyo mzazi anatafuta chakununua ampe, tena mtoto sio tu kusema ninanjaa, bali nataka chipsi, nataka soda, hawajui tena hata kusema naomba. Mtoto akisema tu nimechoka, mzazi anahangaika kutafuta kitu chakumfanya ajisikie furaha, kwamfano wakiwa kwenye gari, mtoto atapewa simu ili apumzike nayo. Sikuhizi kwenye familia za kati, mzazi akifika nyumbani tu, watoto wanaomba simu ili wacheze michezo ya kompyuta, mtoto akisema nataka simu, ni lazimu apewe afanye anachokifanya. Kwa bahati mbaya tabia hii inawafanya kuwa na furaha kwa wakati mfupi na baadaye kwenye maisha marefu ya mbeleni wanapata shida sana. Kwa kukosa uwezo wa kusubiri watoto wanakosa uwezo wa kuishi au kufanya kazi kwenye mazingira yenye msongo wa mawazo. Haiwezekani kabisa kwenye maisha mtu ashindwe kusubiri. Sio kweli kwamba maishani tunapata kila kitu tunachohitaji katika muda ule tunapokihitaji. Sasa kama mtoto anashindwa kuwa na uwezo wa kusubiri au kuvumilia basi ni dhahiri kwamba atapata shida sana kwenye maisha yake, tatizo ambalo limezaliwa na kukuzwa akiwa mtoto mdogo. 3. Watoto ndio wameshika utawalaWatoto wetu wasikuhizi ndio wameshika utawala, watoto ndio wanaosema wanataka nini, wanapenda nini, nini hawataki, wanataka kwenda wapi, wapi hawataki kwenda, wanataka kuwa nanani na nani hawamtaki, wanataka kusoma wapi na wapi hawataki, wanataka kula kipi na kipi hawataki. Kama watoto wataamua wenyewe walale sangapi, unategemea wataamka sangapi? na je watakuwa na akili mbichi ya kujifunza kesho yake wakiwa darasani? Watoto leo wanakiu sana ya kuwa watu fulani au kufikia malengo fulani maishani lakini hawajui namna ya kufikia maana mazingira yao hayakuwafunza hayo. Ndiyo maana watoto wengi wanakata tama mapema na kuharibikiwa, hali ambayo inakuja kuwaumiza sana wazazi wao. Wakati huu wazazi hawajui kwamba mbegu hii ya uharibifu waliipanda wao. 4. Michezo ya kila wakatiWazazi tumetengeneza ulimwengu feki wa furaha kwa watoto wetu, watoto hawafurahii tena kuwa na watu bali kuwa na vitu vilivyowazunguka. Wanafurahia kucheza na vitu zaidi ya kucheza na watu. Utasikia mzazi anasema “yani mwanangu akilia ukimpa simu tu ananyamza kimya” halafu huyu mzazi anafikiri anayosema ni sifa. Maisha yetu wazazi yamekuwa na majukumu mengi katika hali ambayo tunajitahidi kuwapumbaza watoto wetu wadogo na michezo mbalimbali ili iwaduwaze wasahau kwamba wanamuhitaji mama au baba au mlezi mwingine. Unaingia kwenye nyumba ya mtu leo yani sebule haitoshi kwa jinsi kila sehemu kulivyojaa madoli na mamashine yamtoto kuchezea, unawaza anacheza na lipi na lipi analiacha? Sebuleni kumejaa hadi wageni wanakosa pakukanyaga kisa madoli ya mtoto. Nikuulize wewe mzazi, lini utamruhusu mtoto wako akusaidie kuosha vyombo? Ndio maana wengine wanapata shida sana kwenye mahusiano wakianza kuingia kwenye mapenzi maana hawajaandaliwa vyakutosha, unakuta kijana wa kiume mzembe kupita kiasi, anataka kuambiwa chakufanya badala ya kujituma, na binti wakike ndio kabisaa, kila kitu dada wakazi, mke anahitaji dada wakazi siku mbili baada ya harusi. Hii hali imeharibikia wapi? Jibu ni utotoni, wakati watoto hawa wakiwa na wazazi wao. Watoto watajitumaje au kujiongeza vipi wafanye kazi au wajibidishe wakati ubongo wao haujafundishwa hivyo? Ubongo wa mtoto unafundishwa kuwajibika na kujiwajibisha kwa kupitia kujifunza kazi sio wakati wote ni michezo tu. 5. Kupungua sana kwa muda wa kuwa pamoja (Family Socialization)&nbsp;Muda wa watoto kuwa pamoja na wazazi au watu wengine umepungua kwa kiasi kikubwa. Nimesema hapo awali kwamba muda wa kuwepo pamoja kihisia baina ya wazazi na watoto ni kirutubisho kikubwa sana kwenye maendeleo ya ubongo wa mtoto. Nikasema tena kwamba kwasababu ya ubize wa wazazi, wengi wetu tumewapa watoto michezo na mashine za kuwasahaulisha uhitaji wao kwetu wazazi. Ule muda wa watoto kucheza na wenzao nje ya nyumbani haupo tena, watoto wanacheza ndani, na tena chini ya uangalizi, michezo imehamia kwenye televisheni na kwenye simu. Watoto hawakutani tena na marafiki zao na kucheza michezo ya watoto nje au viwanjani. Michezo na mikutano hii kuwasaidia watoto kuendeleza ujuzi wa kufahamiana kijamii “social skills”. Siku hizi watoto wa ndugu hawatembeleani tena hadi siku za sherehe au misiba, wengine wanasahauliana kabisa. Michezo ya kwenye televisheni na kwenye simu haijatengenezwa kukuza uwezo wa kutengeneza marafiki bali kinyume chake michezo hii yakielekrtoniki inaua kabisa ukaribu wa watoto wetu na watu wanaowazunguka. Tafiti zinasema moja ya tabia za watu waliofanikiwa duniani ni uwezo mkubwa wa kutengeneza na kudumu na marafiki “social skills”. Kitu ambacho kwa maisha wanayoishi watoto wetu watakikosa.Kama nilivyokwisha sema awali kwamba ubongo ni mshipa unaoweza kupokea kitu au kuruhusu kitu kilichoingia kuondolewa. Unaweza kuufundisha kitu na kile kitu kisipoendelezwa basi kuondoka au hufa taratibu. Kama unataka mwanao afahamu kujituma basi mpe majukumu kwanza, unataka afahamu kuendesha baiskeli basi mpe baiskeli ajifunze. Kama unataka awe na uwezo wakusubiri basi mfundishe uvumilivu, unatamani awena tabia nzuri anapokuwa na watu basi mfundishe tabia za kijamii, nini anapaswa kuzingatia anapokuwa mbele ya watu, la sivyo kila siku mtoto anakuwa mzuri mkiwa nyumbani lakini mkitoka tu kidogo, anaharibu. Watoto wengi tunaona wanafungiwa kwenye magari au anarudishwa nyumbani kwasababu tu hawezi kukaa hata kidogo na watoto wengine. Fundisha ubongo wake kuwa bora angali mtoto ili awe vile unavyotamani awe.Unaweza kabisa kusababisha utofauti kwa mtoto wako kwa kuufundisha ubongo wake kijamii, kihisia na hata kielimu. Haya hapa mambo muhimu ya kuzingatia 1. Punguza teknolojia kwenye maisha ya mtoto wako, kumbuka sijasema acha bali “punguza”kabisa. Punguza na badala yake ingia kwenye maisha yamtoto wako, zungumza naye, cheka naye, unganisheni hisia zenu. Muulize nini kinaendelea kwenye maisha yake ya nyumbani na shuleni, fahamu nani ni rafiki yake na nani ni adui yake. Fahamu nini anapenda na nini hapendi na kwanini? Chezeni pamoja, na kuwa na wakati pamoja nae au nao nje ya nyumbani. 2. Mfundishe/wafundishe kusubiriEpukana na tabia ya kuwapa kila wanachohitaji kwa wakati uleule wanapohitaji kitu. Waruhusu kujifunza kusubiri. Kumwambia mtoto wako au watoto wako kwamba hawatopata wanachohitaji sasa hivi sio dhambi hata kama wanakiona kitu hicho wanachokihitaji. Kuvumilia na kuwa na subira ni kitu chamuhimu sana mtoto kuwanacho angali mdogo. Anataka kitu mwambie subiri kidogo. Nitakupa lakini sio sasa.Ninunulie kitufulani, mwabie sio wakati huu, haina haja ya kumdanganya kuwa sina hela, afahamu tu kwamba hela ipo ila sio kwa kitu hicho kwa sasa. Epukana kabisa na matumizi ya teknolojia mnapokuwa kwenye gari au mnapokuwa pekeyenu, eti kwasababu tu wamesema wanataka kuchezea hicho walichokitaka. La hasha. 3. Usihofie kuweka mipaka kwenye maisha ya watoto wakoWatoto wetu wanahitaji mipaka ili kukua katika mazingira ya afya njema ya mwili na akili. Watoto wasio na mipaka maishani sio watoto wazuri kabisa. Weka ratiba ya kula, kuwe na muda maalumu wa kulala na kuamka, baadaye watakuwa vijana, waanze kujua kuna muda maalumu wakurudi nyumbani, sio ukienda kucheza unakaa huko hadi muda unapoamua wewe. Watoto wafahamu kuna muda wa kuangalia televisheni na sio muda wote. Watoto wafahamu ninini wazazi wanapenda na ninini hawapendi. Fikiria na fanya kile ambacho ni chema kwa ajili ya leo na kesho yao sio tu kufanya kile kinachowafanya wafurahie. Kuna kufurahia leo na kusononeka kesho.
